Porcelain crowns, are also known as a dental caps, or are restorations placed over an entire tooth to restore it to its normal shape and size. Porcelain crowns are also used to strengthen and improve the appearance of teeth. Crowns are sometimes done when a tooth is severely worn, broken and fillings or inlays/onlays will not resolve the problem. If a tooth is cracked, a crown holds the tooth together to seal the cracks so the damage does not get worse.
Porcelain crowns takes at least two appointments for its placement varying with on the number of dental crowns done and complexity of case.
During the first appointment, your prosthodontist preps a layer of the teeth surface to prepare and enable the porcelain crown to be bonded on. An impression of teeth is then made that is used to fabricate your dental crown.
During the second appointment, your prosthodontist will evaluate the shape, size and color of the porcelain crown before the dental crown is permanently placed onto teeth surface. Teeth is clean, etched and the porcelain crown cemented to teeth surface. The porcelain crown is then securely bonded into place by using a light catalyst to cure the cement.
Thereafter, a third visit is normally made for any required checks and adjustments. Your prosthodontist checks how your gums have responded to the porcelain crowns.
Porcelain crowns can provide a new long-lasting and natural looking smile.
