Dental fillings are most commonly used to fill in cavities in teeth which have decayed. Dental filings may also be done to treat cracked or broken teeth. There are two basic types of dental fillings:
- Composite Resin Fillings : dental fillings that are tooth-colored or white in color
- Amalgam Fillings : dental fillings that are silver-colored
At BIDC, our dental clinics are amalgam-free. This means that our dental center advocates the use of composite resin fillings when and where possible due to controversy with regards to the use of silver amalgam fillings as well as for better natural aesthetics.
Dental fillings will generally be needed as a result of surgary foods and/or poor oral hygiene resulting in the decay of tooth. The dentist will remove the bad part of the tooth with a drill. The dentist will then polish and protect the root and nerves before applying the filling. For composite resin fillings, the tooth-colored material is then applied in layers to the cavity and an ultraviolet light is used to cure each layer. After the successive layers have been completed and hardened, the dentist finishes off with teeth polishing.
Tooth-colored fillings or composite resin fillings are more and more commonly done today with advances in composite material types and an increased emphasis on cosmetic dentistry and teeth aesthetics.
